Playing volleyball is hard. There are lots of things that you have to know in order to play, which can be annoying to memorize. What's even more annoying, as a player, is hearing the same questions over and over, even after we've answered them ten or fifteen times. I sat down recently with a couple of volleyball players that play for the varsity team at Bath High School, and asked them one simple question: "What questions do you get asked the most about volleyball?" The first question that they all answered with was "Why is that girl in a different color jersey?". The answer to this question is simple. This girl is called the libero. The question that always follows this response is "Well, what is a libero?". A libero is a girl that can only play in the back row, who also does not count as a substiution. She can sub in for any number of people, but only can serve for one person. Did you know, liberoes weren't added to the game of volleyball until 1999? Another question that Lori Cook mentioned was "Why are you guys all piled up in the middle?" referencing a period of time before the server on either side serves. The answer to this is simple. The girls on the court have to be in a specific rotation but the spot they are in in the rotation isn't where they need to be on the court. The girls "pile up" so that they can get from their spot in the rotation to the position they play on the court in the fastest amount of time possible. People often ask "What do the people on the corners do?". This is another easy answer, that makes sense when you think about it. The two people on the corners of the court are called line judges. They are there to help call the ball in or out, when it hits the floor. The "up" ref is not always able to see where the ball lands, so they often rely on the line judges.
